I’m a big fan of Anthony Bourdain’s TV show “No Reservations”. The show filmed in Ecuador inspired me. I dedicated some research time on Internet forums to find the best way to get to the coastal town of Puerto Lopez.
When traveling alone without a plan and reservations, it helps to learn from other traveler’s experiences. Sometimes it can backfire on you.
Everything I read about heading to the Ecuadorian coast had an unexpected effect as most of it was about danger, fear and what to avoid.
There were many negative comments on the typical travel sites I do my research on. Fear started to build up in my thoughts, to the point of considering a change of plans. I was considering leaving Bourdain’s delights for another life. Before any final decision, I decided to sleep on it…
The next morning after a good night’s sleep, I felt confident and decided to follow my instincts. I stayed faithful to my desire to get lost in time at Puerto Lopez.
This was the first big lesson of this worldwide adventure: it’s important to learn from other people’s experiences. Even more important is to live our own. We should create our own adventure stories and not travel with fear.
Fear was a travel buddy I decided not to have and Puerto Lopez ended up being an amazing place! Beach Bungalows, excellent food and a trip to Isla de La Plata where I saw wales for the first time in my life!
